Inside the Bancroft's Assessment Process
Bancroft's uses a three-component assessment on a single day in early January: a CEM-style online reasoning test, a 30-minute written Maths paper, and a 30-minute written English (creative writing) paper. Shortlisted candidates return in late January for a 1:1 interview described by the school as 'primarily academic'. No published pass mark exists.
Maths
30 minutes · Handwritten paper, non-calculator
Candidates who only practise CEM-style digital questions may find the written paper format unfamiliar. Timed written practice — not just digital — is essential.
English
30 minutes · Handwritten creative writing paper
Most 11+ preparation focuses on comprehension. Bancroft's English paper is entirely creative writing — candidates who have not specifically practised narrative and descriptive writing under timed conditions are significantly under-prepared.
Online Reasoning
Duration not published · CEM-style digital (on-site)
This is not a standard CEM paper — it also includes Maths and English elements. Both written papers AND the online reasoning test require mathematical and literacy skills.
Topic Difficulty & Weight
Difficulty (%) and exam weight by topic area
Key takeaway: 30-minute written paper, non-calculator. Starts at KS2 level then escalates to non-standard extension problems. Official sample papers are available on the Bancroft's website.
Topic Breakdown
Known Exam Traps — Maths
Practise non-standard problems from official sample papers. Past paper repetition alone is insufficient.
Strict timed practice under exam conditions. Develop pace without sacrificing accuracy on accessible questions.
All computation by hand. Practise long division, multi-step arithmetic, and fraction operations without a calculator.
The pattern: Candidates who only practise CEM-style digital questions may find the written paper format unfamiliar. Timed written practice — not just digital — is essential.

Common Mistakes Parents Make
The errors we see most often from families preparing for Bancroft's School. Avoid these and you're already ahead of the majority of applicants.
Only preparing for CEM reasoning — ignoring written Maths and creative writing
The most common and costly preparation error. Bancroft's assessment has three components. Families who treat it as a standard CEM paper and neglect the written Maths and creative writing papers are significantly under-prepared for two of the three assessed components.
Treating the English paper as comprehension practice
Bancroft's English paper has no comprehension section. It is entirely creative writing. Candidates who have only practised comprehension and inference questions will find themselves with a blank creative writing prompt and no preparation whatsoever.
Rehearsing scripted interview answers
The school explicitly states the interview is 'primarily academic' and 'no preparation is required'. Rehearsed answers are detectable. What is valued is genuine intellectual curiosity and the ability to reason through problems — not a prepared speech.
Registering too late
The November registration deadline is earlier than many families expect, especially those simultaneously managing state grammar registration deadlines in the same autumn term. Mark the deadline clearly and do not miss it.
Assuming a 4+ entry point exists
Several generic directories incorrectly list a 4+ entry for Bancroft's. The school's own website is explicit: three entry points at 7+, 11+, and 16+ only. Families preparing for a non-existent entry route waste significant time and effort.
Underestimating the Maths extension problems
The Maths paper is not a standard KS2 paper. It progresses to non-standard extension problems specifically designed to differentiate the top candidates. Standard KS2 revision alone is insufficient — practise with official Bancroft's sample papers.
Bancroft's vs Competitor Schools
How does Bancroft's School compare to the schools your child is most likely also applying to? This analysis covers the key factors that actually matter to families.

Its co-educational character, three-component assessment, and Drapers' Company bursary programme are the key differentiators.
