Best For
Intellectually ambitious, curious children who want elite academic results without the stuffy atmosphere — and who are equally happy sleeping in a tent, building a raft, or performing in a jazz band. The Perse perfectly marries straight-A academics with a 'muddy knees' ethos that is genuinely rare at this level.
Watch Out For
The registration deadline is 1 December in Year 6 — firmly in the Christmas run-up and easily missed. The English exam is a blended creative-analytical hybrid, not a standard comprehension paper, and most tutoring programmes prepare for the wrong format. Competition data and score thresholds are not published.

Inside the Perse 11+ Entrance Assessments
The Perse sets its own three-paper entrance assessment for 11+ entry — it does not use ISEB, CAT4, or any third-party provider. All three papers are handwritten. Official sample papers are available on the school website and are the single highest-quality preparation resource available. No pass mark or threshold score is published.
English (45 min)
45 minutes · Single blended task: candidates read a literary passage and write one creative response chosen from two options. The response must demonstrate understanding of the source passage and showcase creative writing craft simultaneously.
The most common preparation error is treating the Perse English as two separate tasks — a comprehension section and a creative writing section — because that is what most London 11+ schools test. The Perse format is a single integrated task. Candidates who arrive having only practised discrete comprehension questions are structurally unprepared.
Maths (45 min)
45 minutes · Handwritten written paper progressing from KS2 arithmetic to multi-step logic-based problem-solving. No calculator. Method marks awarded explicitly — correct working earns marks even when the final answer is wrong.
Drilling arithmetic speed and final-answer accuracy is the most common Maths preparation error for the Perse. The paper rewards methodical reasoning, logical presentation, and willingness to attempt unfamiliar problem types — qualities that pure arithmetic practice does not build. Candidates who cannot show their working clearly will lose available marks even on questions they answer correctly.
Verbal Reasoning (45 min)
45 minutes · Standardised Verbal Reasoning paper assessing ability to process, manipulate, and logically deduce rules using language and vocabulary.
VR is the most commonly neglected of the three Perse papers because it sits outside the usual 'own exam = Maths + English only' assumption. Candidates who have prepared thoroughly for Maths and English but done no systematic VR practice often underperform on this paper relative to their overall ability level.

The Perse Interview: Coachability Over Performance
The Perse's 30-minute 1:1 interview is one of the most distinctive at any 11+ school in the country. It is explicitly designed to reward intellectual coachability — the ability to think aloud, make mistakes, ask for help, and self-correct — not polished, rehearsed performance. The school has said publicly that robotic, over-coached answers are immediately identifiable and work against candidates. The single best interview preparation is regular, natural intellectual conversation — not mock interview scripts.
